Colombia is a beautiful country, full of incredible nature and friendly, welcoming people – it’s well worth a visit once international travel resumes! It’s also where some of the world’s finest coffee beans are grown, and recently we got the chance to sample a delicious single origin Colombian Cauca guest variety from Ethical Addictions.
EA have been our sole coffee supplier for the festivals and events that Once In A Blue Moon Cafe has popped up at since 2016, and we’ve always been impressed by the high quality of the coffee they supply us with and their transparent, ethical ethos. They work with and buy direct from villages and small farms all over the world, coffee-bean growers that care for the environment and pay their workers a fair wage in a process that’s free of exploitation.
We’ve always stocked and served the Brazilian Rainforest blend up to this point. It’s delicious, strong and nutty flavour gets consistently good feedback from all of us and our hardworking staff at festivals – not to mention the hungover coffee-lovers we find queueing in a sometimes rainy field eagerly waiting for us to open our doors at 7am. However, we’re always up for a change and this sample variety definitely could be a contender!
After sipping down on the first cup, we found the coffee to be medium strength with a lovely almond, toffee and citrus flavouring, and after a couple more cups it was clear that it’s great for filter coffee and espresso. The beans are grown in Argelia, a remote town in the Cauca coffee region of Colombia. By roasting and selling them here in the UK, Ethical Addictions helps support a project for to provide the funds, education and assistance for farmers in the area to move away from coca production, and the negativity that goes with it, and increase coffee production.
According to the EA website, this coffee is only a guest variety at present, but let’s hope it becomes a permanent product. We think we’ll definitely look in to stocking it when Once In A Blue Moon Café reopens! Like everyone else, we have our fingers crossed festivals, outdoor events and public gatherings can be back on as soon as it’s safe to do so, and we can all be treated to a welcome return to ‘normality’ and some happy times in fields again.
